Everyday I talk to small business people who have web sites. Everyday
I hear the same complaint.
“Should of never bothered. It is just costing me money. I don’t
even get visitors, never mind sales.”
Small business people get
excited about putting up their first web site. They think as soon as
it is up, they will get a rush of customers.
The point that they do not
know and no one has advised them about is “If you build
it they will come” does not work on the internet.
A web site must be looked after just like a physical store.
Some points to ponder:
1: Do you have access
and the know how to update the site yourself?
2: Is your
webmaster available and inexpensive for updates?
3:
Is the site optimized for the search engines? Every page?
4: Has all
the text been checked for spelling?
5: Do you
have keywords sprinkled throughout the pages in logical sentences?
6: Are your
headings big and bold and including one of your keywords?
7: Is the
site easy to navigate? Links to all pages on every page?
8: Do you have links to other sites set up
so that the customer always comes back to you when they click out
of that other site?
9: Have
you submitted your site to various
directories both local and global, depending
on your business.
10: Do you
know when your domain name and hosting fees are due.
( New people to the web do not realize that these are two different
things)
11: Have
you tried to get back links from some good sites associated
with your product?
12: Do you
understand page rank and know how to find it?
13: Does
your web site have a statistical tracker that shows
you enough statistics that can help you plan your marketing strategy?
14: For
people thinking about building a web site, try to get a domain
name that mirrors your business. Keep it as short as possible.
These points are just some of the questions you should ask yourself,
before you even start building a site, but especially if the site is
doing nothing.
